A MESSAGE FROM JEAN LARRABEE
Hello Boston Families and Community Supporters,
Welcome to the West Zone Early Learning Center. I'm glad you found us. We are co-located in the Hennigan building on Heath Street, along with the Hennigan School and the Hennigan Community Center.
As the principal here, I am passionate about early childhood education, and about preserving the right and need for young children to learn in a dedicated environment that encourages self-discovery, exploration, and language development. Young learners are front and center here; they are never considered 'lower rung.' In addition, our school has always offered the Surround Care program, which extends our learning day beyond 2:30 pm, so that children engage in enrichment activities related to their curriculum, while increasing their outside time and exposure to art and reading. Kids get recess once during the regular academic day, and a second time during Surround Care here! Extended learning time closes the achievement gap.
I have been a Boston Public School educator since 1986. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Fitchburg State University, a Master’s in Early Childhood Education from the University of Massachusetts and I am a National Board Certified Early Childhood Generalist. Through my experiences I became committed to the 'whole child' approach-- educating each child individually according to her needs and skills.
I love the Jamaica Plain community because it is diverse, community oriented, and has lots of great places for the children to explore outdoors. More and more local businesses and organizations are supporting our program, for which I am truly grateful. Indeed it takes a village to raise a child.
Take the time to get to know us here at the West Zone Early Learning Center. Our small children have big futures ahead of them and our early childhood specialists on staff won't let them down!
